A rambling, 19th-century
waterfront farmhouse that took in paying guests during the days of
steamboat travel on the Chesapeake Bay. (In the early 1900s, room
and board cost $2 per day. The handwritten logo, above, is from an
early guest register.) Now with modern amenities—such as air
conditioning and indoor plumbing—Hudgins House is available for
couples’ getaways, retreats, reunions and family gatherings.

With 4,000 square feet of
house set on 10 acres, there is ample room for socializing or
afternoon naps, lawn games or alone time, cookouts or
card-playing. Guests can be together when they want, and retreat
to a private room when they’d like to read or rest. Hudgins
House has four bedrooms and three bathrooms, a family room, fully
equipped kitchen, dining room, library, enclosed porch with coffee
bar, waterfront sleeping porch, laundry room, and assorted nooks
and crannies.

Most of the rooms look out over Hills Bay,
with the Chesapeake Bay and Piankatank River in the
distance. There’s extensive shoreline where children can
wade and hunt for treasures, and adults can unwind with
privacy. |

|
Hudgins House is in
Mathews County— reputed to have the most Chesapeake Bay
shoreline of any locality in Virginia. It’s a beautiful place
for simply relaxing, but recreational and sightseeing
opportunities are plentiful on the Middle Peninsula (where Mathews
is located), the Northern Neck, and throughout the Hampton
Roads/Tidewater area. Birders, golfers, history buffs, |

fishermen, boaters,
bicyclists, joggers, kayakers, artists—all will find a
place here. The house is convenient to public boat ramps
and marinas. By land, easy day trips include Colonial
Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown, Busch Gardens and
Water Country, several maritime and watermen’s museums,
James River plantation houses, art museums and galleries,
and numerous other attractions.

While Hudgins
House is close to many activities, it is also an ideal
place to just sit and relax.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Maximum overnight capacity is
ten people. All bed, bath and table linens are provided. A gas grill and
picnic tables are supplied for waterfront cookouts. Sorry: No food
service, no maid service, no pets and no smoking in the house. We'll be
happy to provide you with local phone numbers if you need a caterer, house
cleaner or kennel.

MINIMUM STAY
Hudgins House is available for a minimum rental of three nights,
whole-house only. Check-in time is 3 pm, checkout is noon. Detailed
driving directions and "what-to-bring" information will be
supplied when reservations are made.

PAYMENT/
SECURITY DEPOSIT
We accept most major credit
cards. One-half of the rental fee must be paid within a week of booking to
guarantee the reservation. No later than a month before arrival, the
balance must be paid, along with a security deposit equal to 25% of the
rental fee. The security deposit will be returned within a week of your
departure, provided there is no damage, loss or extraordinary cleaning
required.
CANCELLATION POLICY
Your deposit (one-half of the
rental fee) will be returned, less a $10 service charge, if the
reservation is canceled one month or more ahead of the scheduled arrival
date. If the cancellation is received within the month before arrival, the
rental fee will be returned only if the reservation is resold. The
security deposit will be returned in full.
